In the beautiful Indian Ocean about 1500 kilometers off the East coast of Africa and just northeast of Madagascar, lies the archipelago of the Seychelles islands. This tropical paradise comprises well over 100 different islands with the main port of call in Victoria on Mahé Island.

The islands were under French dominion in the 1700s, but Britain assumed full control after the Treaty of Paris in 1814. Independence was granted in 1976 and it has been a republic of the Commonwealth ever since. The local economy uses the Seychelles Rupee (rough equivalent is 1 Euro = 14.5 Rupees or 1 US Dollar = 11 Rupees) and is heavily dependent upon tourism. English, French and a local Creole are the official languages although many Seychellois also speak fluent Italian or German.

The climate is very moderate with temperatures ranging from 24 to 30ºC and during the hotter months of December to April the humidity can reach 80%. Being outside the normal cyclone zones, it is very rare for this island region to have high winds.
