The port city of Lagos is situated at the mouth of the Bensafrim River where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, around 35 kilometers northeast of Sagres and 40 kilometers southwest of Portimao. The town dates back more than two thousand years and boasts a storied maritime history, which has helped to make it a popular tourist destination in modern times among boating and yachting enthusiasts from around the world.

Lagos is the perfect base from which to explore the many towns and villages dotting the surrounding coastline by sea. For example, the nearby port town of Milfontes is quite popular for its pristine beaches, countless private alcoves and small waterfalls, while the city of Sines is situated in Portugal’s protected and stunningly beautiful Southwest Natural Park. The marina here boasts more than 450 berths, and is still home to a thriving fleet of fishing vessels.
