The port city of Lelystad is situated in the heart of the Netherlands in the province of Flevoland, around 100 kilometers southeast of Den Helder and 95 kilometers south of Wens. Although some of the oldest human remains in Europe were discovered nearby, the city was founded in 1951 and has become a popular destination in modern times for boating and yachting enthusiasts from around the world, thanks in part to its scenic beauty and excellent amenities.

Although Lelystad is the largest municipality in the Netherlands, much of it is under water, which tends to create particularly spectacular sunsets during the summer months. A number of excellent marinas can be found in the area, as well as an inland port and canals that were designed to help engineers control the water level. In addition, Lelystad is home to the magnificent replica of the Batavia, a17th century battleship and popular tourist attraction.
