Being an island nation located in the Indian Ocean, Maldives is comprised of a chain of 26 islands, which are actually natural atolls or lagoon islands, and numerous islets. Geographically speaking, it is the smallest country in Asia in terms of land area and population. It is also considered to be the lowest country on earth with its highest point only 2.3 meters above sea level.
The country’s capital is located in the island of Male where most of the commercial activities take place. It is serviced by a commercial harbor that connects the city to the surrounding inhabited islands and islets as well as to the other surrounding countries. The port serves as a docking area for recreational, cargo and foreign trade vessels that bring goods to the nation.
A marina is also incorporated in the harbor area where cabin cruisers and yachts dock. With tourism as one of the country’s major sources of income, the port is supported by various modernization programs, which continue to make it an appealing destination for boating and yachting enthusiasts.
