The port town of Lipari is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the island of Lipari, which is the largest of the Aeolian Islands and lies just off the northern coast of Sicily, around 50 kilometers northwest of Milazzo and 80 kilometers from Messina, Italy. With a surface area of just over 37 square miles, it may be home to only four small villages, but it boasts a rich and ancient history and has been inhabited since prehistoric times.

The town of Lipari is the most logical base from which seafaring travelers can easily explore the seven surrounding islands, which make up the archipelago, as well as the scenic coast of nearby Sicily. Adventuresome visitors will thrill to the active volcanoes, especially the many eruptions on the island of Stromboli, but fishing trips, swimming, diving, parasailing and a variety of other water sports are also quite common in the area.
