The port town of Lavrion, also known as Laurium, is situated in the southeastern portion of Attica, a historical region of modern-day Greece, around 70 kilometers southeast of Piraeus and 11 kilometers north of Sounion on the Aegean Sea. Settled since before 1000 BCE, the area has become a popular tourist destination for boating and yachting enthusiasts from around the world during modern times.

The port of Lavrion is situated in the center of town, close to a number of fine beaches and it is an excellent base from which to explore the many islands in the area. For example, the island of Makronisos is situated to the east of Lavrion, just across the bay, and as the ancient island of Helena, it boasts a rich cultural history. In addition, the airport is situated quite close by, while the ancient site of Thorikos lies on a hill overlooking the harbor.
