The city of Potsdam is situated on the Havel River in the German federal state of Brandenburg, and lies within the Berlin metropolitan area, around 24 kilometers from the city’s centre. Occupied by humans since the Bronze Age, today the area boasts more than 20 lakes and rivers, including the Templiner See, Sacrower See and Heiliger See.

Due to the large amount of water in and around Potsdam, it is possible to explore the city and the surrounding area by water, which has become a popular recreational activity for boating and yachting enthusiasts from around the world. A number of fine marinas offer visitors access to a wide variety of excellent amenities, including restaurants, tour guides, water sports and shopping. Also of note, the city itself is a historical and cultural wonder, with its magnificent historic old town centre and status as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
