Located in the Schleswig-Holstein region of northern Germany, the port city of Kappeln lies on the Baltic Sea, around 45 kilometers southeast of Flensburg and 30 kilometers northeast of Eckernförde. Since at least the early 14th century, the town has owed its livelihood to a thriving fishing industry, which still thrives in modern times. It is also a popular destination for boating and yachting enthusiasts who are looking for a quiet maritime getaway during the summer months.

The town of Kappeln is working on a new port initiative as of late 2009, but the current recreational port is also quite charming and provides seafaring travelers with easy access to the historic areas of town. In addition, the beaches here are pristine and only a few kilometers from the main areas of town. Interestingly, Kappeln fishermen still use Herring Fences, which were developed in the 15th century to catch fish while spawning.
