The small port town of Heiligenhafen is situated on a sheltered bay in the Ostholstein region of northeastern Germany, at the eastern end of the Wagrien peninsula on the Baltic Sea. Settlement here dates back to the 13th century and most likely centered around the harbor, as it is still an important fishing centre for the region today. In addition, the town is a popular tourist destination for boating and yachting enthusiasts, especially those who are looking for deep sea fishing opportunities, thanks to the ample cod and various other flatfish that can be found in the surrounding waters.

The harbor in Heiligenhafen is situated quite close to the old town centre, which boasts a well-preserved church that is estimated to be at least 750 years old, as well as a newly restored square that is home to the weekly market and a variety of attractive, half-timbered historic homes.
