The impressive coastal city of Marseille is located on the southeastern coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, around 30 kilometers northwest of Cassis and 35 kilometers southeast of Carry-le-Rouet. As the oldest city in France and its largest commercial port, Marseille is also the capital of the Provence-Alpes-Cote-d’Azur region and the second most populated city in the country. It lies on a rugged section of the coast that is dotted with small fjords and boasts a warm, sunny climate.

Inhabited by humans for more than 30,000 years, Marseille is home to a number of impressive Paleolithic cave paintings and ancient ruins, as well as a wide variety of more recent historical attractions. The old port, situated in a natural harbor, has been in use since antiquity and is still used today as a marina and loading point for chartered cruises. It also boasts a wide variety of restaurants, bars and shopping, while the newer commercial port lies to the north.
