The bustling seaport of Lorient is situated in the picturesque Brittany region of northwestern France on the Atlantic Ocean, around 135 kilometers southeast of Brest and 60 kilometers northwest of Vannes. The city was first developed in the early 17th century when the French East India Company was founded and later constructed shipyards in the area, but today the city is dependent largely on tourism and fishing for its economy.

Lorient has also become a popular destination for seafaring travelers, as it is home to several impressive boating and yachting marinas located throughout the bay. In addition, the Lorient South Brittany Airport is conveniently located close by, while an important former German U-Boat base is open to the public. From here, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the harbor and the bay, although bombing during World War II destroyed large portions of the old city.
